Landscape with the Canon 7D

by Thierry on November 3, 2009 · 6 comments

I’m loving my Canon 7D more and more.

I have tried and tested the 7D in several different situations shooting sport, low light, high speed and fashion.

Last week, I put it to the test of landscape photography and real life wedding assignment.

I was a bit reluctant when packing for  wedding at more than 2 hour drive from home. Always conscious that I have to be better than the previous wedding, I knew what I could do with my full frame cameras (Canon 5D Mark IIs and Nikon D700) so packing a crop sensor if a bit of a hesitation.

Anyway, I loved the high tone priority of my previous Canon 1D Mark III so I wanted to check out the new version of it on the Canon 7D.

To be honest, I packed the Canon 5D and the Nikon D700 along with the 7D.

These are a few landscapes taken during my location scouting before each of my weddings.

Images from the wedding are coming soon. Check back this space for more.

Nice shots. Care to share how do you find 7D compared to 5DMII as a landscape camera? And since you have my other favorite D700, how about 5DMII compared to D700? I am mostly shooting landscape and looking for best way to go. All of them are using different lenses, EF-S, EF and Nikon mount so don,t want to commit until I am sure I will stick with the camera for awhile. Thanks for any input, I am looking from purely IQ perspective, low ISO, tripod and WA shots.

Hey Peter,

I started shooting with Nikon way back in film times (long time ago huh?) and went to Canon for their low light performance and especially the colour rendition at high ISO.
IQ wise, the D700 is very capable of delivering detailed landscape.
In 14 bit mode it delivers similar file size than the Canon 5D2 and for landscape, where high ISO is rarely required, I’d say that it would be a matter of taste and lenses choice.
I have a full set of Canon glasses and prefer its “advanced simplicity”

PS: The 7D is also very capable camera for landscape photography

Beautiful night shots Thierry. I wonder what lens you’re using for these landscape photos. Very vivid.

Hi Bao,
I used the Canon EF-S 10-22 for these shots.
I can’t remember the zoom settings but will get back to you when I’ll get home.
Thanks for the comments.
